WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 - THESSALONIKI

Read I and II Timothy
Today we will visit Meteora in Western Thessaly, at Meteora, world famous Byzantine monasteries perch precariously atop rock pinnacles of varied and beautiful shapes. The gigantic rocks are weathered by years of erosion, each one standing alone in space, some over 1,000 feet high. The rocks have been inhabited since the 14th century, when monks sought refuge in cliff side caves, then fled higher to build the original wooden shelters later transformed into monasteries. In the Byzantine period, the monastic communities were important centers for art. Today, some of the monasteries are still occupied by religious orders. Visiting the two monasteries is a fascinating and memorable experience.

Depart Kalambaka and drive through Grevenna passing Egnatia road, drive through the valley of Tempe along the green water of River Pinios, continue on through Katerini to the cosmopolitan city of Thessaloniki.
