Mountain-top experience

Today we visited two Byzantine monasteries atop the mountains in a region called Meteora. I wasn't expecting such beautiful mountains and interesting cliffs in Greece. As we drove up the mountain, we could see the holes in the cliffs where monks would go and live. Talk about simplicity and silence and solitude at a whole new level! These are active monasteries and convents.

Our guide took us through the main chapels where the icons of Christ, the gospel, persecutions and the crucifixion and ascension of Christ covered every square inch of the space. From large to small, your heart and mind could not help but be overwhelmed, inspired and awakened. Pictures were not allowed inside so I'll have to leave it to your imagination.

Here are two photos...one of the monastery in the distance and another of some of our pilgrims in the courtyard of the convent.
