Today we visited the site of an ancient Roman forum (agora in the Greek or marketplace). It's hard to imagine driving down the street and seeing ruins from 2,300 years ago. Can you picture driving down Westheimer and seeing excavations from even 200 years ago?
We also visited two beautiful churches. St Dimetrios built in the 5th century and added on to in the 7th and restored in the middle ages. The Agia Sophia was equally grand and breath taking.
Driving out of the city, we arrived at one of the greatest discoveries in the 20th century in Greece--the tomb of Philipp II (father of Alexander the Great). Pictures were not allowed so my attempt at a summary will have to suffice. Philipp was assassinated by one of his body guards so the tomb was in some regards hastily built. They dug the tomb into a hillside and erected a temple facade with two interior rooms. The jewelry, adornments, military equipment and armor found in the tomb were of such grandeur that the persons who discovered it knew it was of royalty. Gold after gold after gold!
We ended the day in Berea where Paul preached at the synagogue and in the streets. Carrie Olander led a devotional about God's immense love described in 1 Cor 13. On the road we met a pastor of evangelical church and Jim and the group prayed for him.
